About the Games

Organising Committee

It takes a huge support team to host the NatWest International Island Games. Our Organising Committee is in place and is building a team of volunteers and suppliers to support the planning and running of the 2023 Games.

Dame Mary Perkins: Chair

Board Director and Co-founder of Specsavers Optical Group, the largest privately owned retail optical business globally, with over 1900 outlets in 10 countries with 32,000 employees and 3,000 joint venture partners. She is involved with many local and national charities as Patron and Ambassador and encourages all areas of her business to support their local charities, many of which are in sport.

Wayne Bulpitt CBE: Director of Volunteering

Wayne Bulpitt founded the Active Group Limited in 2002 and has over 35 years’ experience in creating, managing and developing investment products and regulatory services from a commercial perspective. At the same time as successfully building the business, Wayne has been a passionate supporter of philanthropy and volunteering, especially in the support and development of young people.  He was at the centre of the strategic leadership of the Scout Movement in the UK from 2001, overseeing its significant transformation and growth and was made a Vice-President in September 2016.

A highly regarded inspirational leader and philanthropist, Wayne’s significant contributions were recognised in the 2017 Birthday Honours when he was made Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) for his voluntary services to young people.

Ian Damarell: Finance

Ian is a chartered accountant and is an Associate Director of BDO Guernsey. He retired from playing cricket and hockey in 2009 following over 25 years of involvement with the island squads in both sports, but is still involved in the administration of Guernsey cricket.

Eric Legg: Special Advisor/IIGA Liaison

Retired Bank Manager with over 30 years’ experience in Sports Administration in Guernsey.  He has been to the Games since 1993 and was Treasurer of the IIGA from 2001 to 2011 before becoming an Honorary Life Member of the Association.

Steve Champion Smith: Logistics

Steve spent his childhood in Uganda, Tehran and Tanzania before going to school and college in the UK and coming to Guernsey in 1985. Steve worked in the catering industry before becoming a Prison Officer, reaching the position of senior officer and HMP service Hostage Negotiator. Steve then moved to become Operations Directors with a local freight company before becoming Executive Director with Condor Ferries in 2013, a position he still holds today.

Anne Thomas: Logistics

Anne's thorough planning and Event organisation skills have been widely evidenced in numerous Third Sector volunteer positions, undertaken whilst raising her 4 children. 

With an attention to detail approach, Anne's earlier background in project logistics alongside her current role as Manager of Styx Community Centre, is the perfect fit to partner with Steve as Co-Director of Logistics for the Island Games.

Colin Le Conte: IT

Colin set up Digimap, a world leader in computer-based mapping and geographic information systems technology, nearly 20 years ago. He was responsible for the results service for the 2003 NatWest Island Games with the assistance of Dr Peter Harris and Matt Polson and Digimap provided results service support for the Island Games in Jersey in 2015.

Colin was the Chief Timekeeper for the Union International Motonautique, the World Governing body for Offshore Powerboat racing for 14 years and introduced computerised timekeeping and tracking systems into Class 1. He is also responsible for the St Peter Port lifeboat website and Facebook pages.

Amanda Hibbs: Communications and Events

Amanda has worked in the fields of graphic design, marketing, communication and events management for the last 28 years. She is an experienced events manager and has organised large-scale seminars, conferences and awards ceremonies in the UK, Guernsey and Australia. She was a committee member of the Guernsey Hockey Club for several years and organised the Easter Hockey Festivals. Amanda is a keen cyclist and has participated in several charity bike rides in Guernsey, Tanzania and France.

Julia Bowditch: Games Director

Julia is an experienced event and project manager who has worked as a venue manager at two Commonwealth Games, the 2012 London Olympics and the 2015 European games in Baku.  Julia was also involved in the volunteers programme for the Olympic Torch Relay for the London Olympics.  She was Roy Martel’s assistant at the Guernsey Games in 2003 and since then she (and her husband) have made a career out of being involved with various International Games (including the London Olympics).

Pete Vidamour: Sports Director

Semi-retired and a Director of a local leisure industry group, Pete has been Captain and Manager of the Guernsey Senior Cricket squad, a footballer in his younger days and a keen golfer.  Also has past experience in Sports Administration for several years.  Also is an Accountant with many years Senior Management experience in the Finance Industry.

Emma Beardsell: Deputy Games Director

Emma joined the Organising Committee in September 2022. Emma will be working closely with Julia on the planning for the Games. She will also be taking leading on our Youth Engagement Programme and will act as a liaison with all of the Sports. Emma is a keen long distance runner and has previously run a full marathon dressed as Wonder Woman, so we knew she was the right person for the role!
